    Google Knocked Offline - Denies It Was Hacked

    Google and some of its services - including Gmail - were not available on Saturday May 7, 2005 from 6:45 to 7:00 pm EDT, and some users were not able to connect for up to an hour. Because users were rerouted to another Web site when they tried to connect to Google, there was speculation the problem was caused by hackers, but Google denied that, saying it was a Domain Name System (DNS) problem.

    About.com - Sold to the New York Times

    The New York Times announced today that it will purchase About.com for $410 million from publisher Primedia. The Times, whose newspapers include The New York Times and The Boston Globe, said it will expand About.com's content and visibility and use the site to market its products and those of its advertisers. I hope this will turn out to be good news for the Web site editors, and all of my other friends at About.com. I am thinking about you guys!

About.com is about to undergo a significant change, because Primedia is selling it off to the highest bidder. AOL, Google, and Yahoo are among the five companies expected to bid by today's deadline.     POP3 Access to Gmail is Being Rolled Out

    Google will roll out POP3 support to its beta Gmail users over the next few weeks. Users with POP3 access will be able to read their Gmail using client-side email applications such as Microsoft Outlook and Qualcomm Eudora.

    Your Gmail Account Probably Has an Atom Feed

    Google is working on an Atom feed generator that will allow a Gmail user to see a list of their unread messages in their favorite newsfeed reader. Atom newsfeeds are being created now for some - and perhaps all - Gmail accounts, but not all Gmail users know where to find them and the feeds do not yet work with all newsfeed readers.

    Ability to Save Drafts Coming Soon?

    I keep reading in the online Gmail forums that Google will release additional Gmail features soon, including the one feature I need more than any other - the ability to create draft messages and save them for sending later. Other features that may be coming soon are a more sophisticated editor for the contacts list and an Atom feed for unread Email. I'm not quite sure how that last one would work...

    Is Google Developing Its Own Browser?

    There is a strong rumor circulating that Google may be developing its own browser based on the open-source Mozilla code. Adding fuel to that rumor is the fact that Google owns the domain name GBrowser.com and even more so the fact that Google recently recruited and hired four employees away from Microsoft including key Internet Explorer development team member Adam Bosworth.
